Travel Routes

General Information

Most of these routes are step-free and all involve as little walking as possible! Please note that Old Street, Barbican, Victoria and Paddington underground stations have lots of steps which is why the routes below avoid the Heathrow Express (which terminates at Paddington) and sometimes recommend bus travel instead of the tube/underground.  London buses are very easy to use. The stops are announced and displayed on a screen inside the bus.

These routes – and alternative  routes – are available on the Transport for London website  where you can also download maps.

If you are travelling over a weekend please check the tfl website as some underground lines may be closed for engineering works.

Heathrow Airport has three underground stations  – Terminals 1,2 &3; Terminal 4 and Terminal 5

Gatwick Airport is not on the underground network but there are overground trains into central London.

Oyster Card – Public Transportation

The easiest and cheapest way to travel around London is to use an Oyster Card. These are available at Heathrow Airport, all underground stations and local shops displaying the Oyster logo. At the time of writing (April 2013) Oyster cards can be obtained for a deposit of £5. Oystercards can be topped up with more money (using cash or credit cards) as required.

Travelling by underground (tube) from Heathrow to central London currently costs £5. A tube journey within central London costs £2.10 and a bus journey costs £1.35. Oyster Cards are valid on all buses, tubes and trains within the London area – but not on the Heathrow Express or trains from Gatwick into central London. Oystercards must be placed on the round yellow readers when boarding a bus (but not when getting off) and at the platform gates when both entering and exiting for the train and tube. Please make sure that your Oyster card beeps when you place it on the reader – or you may be charged an excess fare!

Transport to/from Heathrow Airport

London Underground’s Piccadilly Line provides the most cost‐effective rail route between Heathrow Airport and the capital. Journey time is under an hour and you shouldn’t have to wait longer than ten minutes for a train, even off‐peak.

  • Where to catch trains
Heathrow has three (3) London Underground stations – one for Terminals 1 and 3, one each at Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3 station is in the central area between the terminals, which are a few minutes’ walk away via underground walkways. Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 stations are in the basements of the terminal buildings. All stations are in Travelcard Zone 6.
  • Fares and tickets
A single fare to central London costs approximately £5. Purchase a Travelcard and you’re covered for London buses and some mainline trains too. Tickets are available at all London Underground stations, from ticket offices or machines. Pre‐paid Oyster cards can also be used on the London Underground.
  • Train times
Please consult the London Underground website or call +44 (0)20 7222 1234 for accurate and up-to‐ date information.
  • Getting to and from your Hotel to Wesley’s Chapel
For those who are able, the walk is between 10 and 15 minutes. For those who choose not to walk, cab service is available by request at the front desk of your hotel. If you have mobility issues, please indicate this when you register for the event, or on arrival in London.
