Prayers for the Victims and Families of Palm Sunday Bombings
The World Methodist Council (WMC) condemns the horrific Palm Sunday attacks on worshipers at two Egyptian Coptic Churches. The Christian community mourns today for those killed or injured following the bombings at St. George Church in Tanta and St. Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria (which took place minutes after the patriarch of the Egyptian Coptic Church, Pope Tawados II conducted a service). The attacks left 49 dead and at least 100 injured.
The General Secretary of the WMC, Bishop Ivan Abrahams said; “these attacks at the beginning of Holy Week are cowardly deeds.” He appealed to President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi to ensure the protection of all Egyptians, especially the minority Christian community targeted by ISIS which claimed responsibility for the attacks. He also encouraged the World Methodist family to pray for peace in this region where Christians are frequently the targets of violent attacks, and to pray for the families and loved ones of the victims.
